Down jackets or puffer jackets are a 'must have' for New Zealand winters. Good down jackets are never cheap so when you buy one you want it to last.
Our journey began with a simple goal: to craft a down jacket robust enough for the adventurous souls braving the wilderness, whether for work or play. The result? We did. Our super tough Down Jacket would stand up to gorse, firewood stacking, and brushing past the old farm gear you left out.
Yet, our ambition didn't end there.
Inspired by the legendary durability of our canvas Supertrousers, we envisioned a down jacket that embodies the same indestructible spirit. Enter the Cactus Canvas Down Jacket: a marvel of craftsmanship, this jacket is far from the typical lightweight layer.
It's a well-made workhorse for those who work in the toughest of environments, designed with no compromise on toughness, warmth, and reliability.
Crafted with pride in New Zealand, our 30+ years of manufacturing know-how shows through in every detail of the Cactus Canvas Down Jacket.
We've listened, we've learned, and we've enhanced. Features include a robust two-way zipper, reinforced pockets for added durability, a detachable hood for versatility, and advanced water-repellent C-Canvas to keep you dry and warm in the harshest conditions.
Key features of the Canvas Down Jacket include:
- Water-repellent Premium C-Canvas exterior for ultimate protection.
- An adjustable, detachable hood, offering customizable shelter from the elements.
- A durable main zipper, equipped with a two-way slider for ease and flexibility.
- 750-loft white goose down, ethically and responsibly sourced, ensuring exceptional warmth without compromise.
- DWR-treated down, ensuring that even in the rain, the down resists water, prevents clumping, and continues to insulate.
- A robust Premium C-Canvas outer shell, paired with a soft nylon taffeta lining, and reinforced at critical wear points for unmatched durability.
- Ample storage with two internal chest pockets, an external chest pocket, and two fleece-lined hand pockets for warmth and convenience.
- Comfort-enhancing fleece-lined cuffs, a testament to our attention to every detail.
Proudly made in New Zealand, the Cactus Canvas Down Jacket is more than just a piece of clothing; it's a commitment to quality, durability, and the outdoor lifestyle that defines us.

A tailored women’s cut of the Men's Supertrousers.
The Women's Supertrousers are the result of giving traditional Cactus functionality the feminine touch of an experienced women’s apparel designer. We present to you our solution to the demands of those women who need real workwear but want to look good in it. These are the perfect all-rounders, whether you are trapping stoats for DOC, working the land or travelling the globe.
Like all Cactus products, these are made to the highest quality standards right here in New Zealand. We use our proven European C-Canvas and YKK zips and incorporate carefully considered design features such as articulated knees and strategic bar tacking for strength and wear-ability. Because of this we can confidently offer a lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship.
When you first put these on you might be surprised by the stiffness of the fabric. Have faith – after a bit of use they will “relax” and mold to the shape of your body, ending up being possibly your most comfortable item of clothing - and they’ll stay that way; truly pants that wear in, not out.
- C-Canvas is great to wear and will last for ages
- Women's cut
- Made in New Zealand with first world environmental and labour values
- Articulated knee for tricky manoeuvres, be they building houses or a quick spot of bouldering
- Casual styling which won't let you down in most social situations
- Bar-tacked at all stress points
- YKK zips because they're the best
- Phone pocket for easy access to your digital companion
- Two back pockets
- Fabric : Proofed European 12oz C-Canvas
- Weight : 700 grams
- Essentially, Canvas Supertrousers and Supershorts require a bit of a wear-in period to soften the fabric.
- The first three or so washes should be done by hand, then you should be right to machine wash.
- Use cold water with a mild powder detergent, rinse thoroughly, very gentle or no spin and line-dry.
-
Do not iron, dry clean, spin-dry or use bleach.
- When new, the stiffness of the fabric means it creases in points rather than soft folds - washing them in an aggressive or hot machine can cause damage on the crease points.
-
Our canvas also has a waterproofing agent which, if washed in an aggressive or hot machine, can shift and discolour. This will appear as white lines which cannot be removed.
-
Washing inside out will minimise lighter coloured creases on the outside of the fabric, but won’t remove stains quite as well.
- Drip dry without creases (it won't take long as the polyester in the fabric doesn't hold much water)
- Close zips while washing (they'll last longer)
- Note that all the colours will lighten with use and washing as the natural cotton content of the fabric won't take a dye fixative in the same way as a 100% synthetic fabric.
- If you get attacked by a pig and the fabric gets holed while saving your reproductive potential send them back and we'll patch ‘em for a small fee
- If you are still not sure, give us a call or flick us an email
