In keeping with the theme of ‘staple’ gear for Kiwis, we bring you the Cactus Checked Flannel Shirt. Now complete and glowing with awesomeness we’re all wondering why we took so long to make these.
From the tradie go-to work top, to the urbanite’s default classic and the weekend warrior’s dash-and-grab favourite, the flannel shirt has to be one of the most versatile items of clothing.
Now you can probably pick up a flannel shirt from your local red shed for the price of half a dozen (non-craft) beers but it will never outlive, look as good, or feel as amazing as the Cactus version. So what makes the Cactus Checked Flannel Shirt stand out from the rest?
- It’s made from quality, 100% Cotton, 233gsm soft and warm brushed flannel
- NASA grade thread (that's strong!) and military grade buttons
- Voluminous, generous length chest pockets - they fit notebooks & phones
- Felled side seams for strength
- Long back to save you from the infamous butt crack issue
- Roomy enough to nicely fit a Cactus merino underneath for extra warmth on those cold days
- Reasonably high collar - high enough to keep the sun off but not so high as to look like a dork
- Double layered shoulders for extra strength and durability
- NZ made - right here in Christchurch
Please note: shrinkage may occur in first wash.

Meet the Do-Gooder - don’t let it’s simplicity distract you from it’s complete awesomeness!
Here at the Cactus HQ we get our choice of all the packs and bags we sell, and the one the you’ll see us with more than anything else is the Do-Gooder. It started out as reusable shopping bag that would really go the distance, but once we made a few we quickly realised it had far more potential than that.
You’ll see us bring our lunch and office essentials to work in a Do-Gooder, stuffing the roadtrip “get at them while you’re driving” bit and pieces in one, carrying muddy cycling shoes and helmets around, and loading them with beers and sausages when it’s BBQ time. At the farmers market the Do-Gooder makes the other pseudo-eco plastic bag alternatives look disposable.
We wanted Cactus tough, so 12oz C-Canvas was the obvious choice - it’s so tough we carried Jan in it round the office. Your guess as to how much she weighs, but more than Rob (who back when he was a climber referred to his forearms as “Da Boyz”) could carry in one hand! Cactus durability means it’ll last a really long time, and of course it comes with a lifetime warranty even though we doubt you’ll need it. It’s also easily repairable. Yes, long lasting and repairable - that’s all good stuff for the environment we reckon.
- Super durable and washable proofed European 12oz C-Canvas
- Deep enough for good carrying capacity
- Pre-bent straps that stay on your shoulder
- Internal pocket to make sure your phone/wallet/keys aren't always at the bottom
- Construction backed by a lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship
- Weight: 275 grams
- Fabric: 12oz Ultra C-Canvas
- Measurements: 41cm deep (or high whichever way you see it) x 15cm wide x 34cm long (along the zip)
-
Country / Region of manufacture: New Zealand
- Our C-Canvas has a water resistant coating applied to it. To make this last as long as possible we recommend that you don’t wash it in a machine
- Brush dirt or crusty stuff from the bag once it is dry
- Hand wash in cold or warm water using mild detergent or pure soap - preferably one that's nice to the earth
- Drip dry without creases
- If your veggies do manage to make an escape bid through the bottom of your bag, drop it in to use and we’ll repair it for a small fee
If you're after a hat to protect your face from the elements during your summer surf and sand missions this summer, the Cactus Hard Hat will become your default. As a word of warning, as well as being extremely practical, it will it make you look mighty attractive too.
Because Cactus gear is made to last, the general rule of thumb is to design gear that will keep looking good (unlike shell suits of the 80's). The New Zealand Bucket Hat is timeless. It's been the go-to style of summer (or winter) hat for generations and will continue to be - especially now that Cactus has made one.
Made from durable C-Canvas in 4 different sizes.

Cactus's answer to 'softer' shorts. These have been through some rigorous wear testing and we have come to the firm conclusion that they are the ultimate summer go-to shorts for biking, tramping and heading to the beach.
The SOS's are the shorts version of our SOS Trousers. The same cut and fit, only shorter.
They're made from a lighter, polycotton drill fabric, which has mechanical stretch and is super durable - and our idea of durable is based on the Cactus Supershorts so we don't make that claim lightly.
Great features like quick drying fabric and mesh pockets, ideal for water drainage post jetty jumping. Triple stitched crotch. YKK zip and of course they come with our lifetime warranty on faulty materials and workpersonship.
Available in any colour, as long as it's slimming black.
Made right here in NZ.
Please note: In June 2020, the fit of the SOS was changed. Please check your size against the size chart if you are re-purchasing.
If the size you want is not showing, we are probably out of stock. Email or call us on 0800 122 682 to find out when they will be here or to place a backorder.

Any dog can have a regular collar, but a Cactus dog deserves a Cactus collar.
Made in New Zealand from premium quality American steer leather, this collar is built to suit both a serious working dog or a furry companion. With natural finish top grain leather, a heavy-duty buckle and a welded square keeper – this beauty could take on more than just a dog.
Please do not use the collar in salt water as it will rust the metal parts.

Down jackets or puffer jackets are a 'must have' for New Zealand winters. Good down jackets are never cheap so when you buy one you want it to last.
This is why we took on the challenge to make a tougher down jacket for those working and playing hard in the outdoors. And we did - super tough winter jackets that stand up to gorse, firewood stacking, brushing past old farm gear and the likes, they even stand up to the odd spilled coffee on the sideline on a frosty Saturday morning.
Taking on broad feedback that we've had over the years, from both our customers and our repairs team, we've strengthened them in all the places that down jackets are known to fail.
The latest evolution of our men's Cactus Down Jacket features a grunty two way zipper, extra strengthening around the pockets, a removable hood, a few more 'Michelin man' rolls, improved water repelling super powers and so much more.
- Brush dirt from the product while still dry
- Hand wash in a warm water using a non-detergent soap or specific down-washing product - preferably one that's nice to the earth

- Close zips while washing (they'll last longer), you can also lightly oil or wax zips periodically to increase their lifespan
- Do not machine wash

Down jackets or puffer jackets are a 'must have' for New Zealand winters. Good down jackets are never cheap so when you buy one you want it to last.
Our journey began with a simple goal: to craft a down jacket robust enough for the adventurous souls braving the wilderness, whether for work or play. The result? We did. Our super tough Down Jacket would stand up to gorse, firewood stacking, and brushing past the old farm gear you left out.
Yet, our ambition didn't end there.
Inspired by the legendary durability of our canvas Supertrousers, we envisioned a down jacket that embodies the same indestructible spirit. Enter the Cactus Canvas Down Jacket: a marvel of craftsmanship, this jacket is far from the typical lightweight layer.
It's a well-made workhorse for those who work in the toughest of environments, designed with no compromise on toughness, warmth, and reliability.
Crafted with pride in New Zealand, our 30+ years of manufacturing know-how shows through in every detail of the Cactus Canvas Down Jacket.
We've listened, we've learned, and we've enhanced. Features include a robust two-way zipper, reinforced pockets for added durability, a detachable hood for versatility, and advanced water-repellent C-Canvas to keep you dry and warm in the harshest conditions.
Key features of the Canvas Down Jacket include:
- Water-repellent Premium C-Canvas exterior for ultimate protection.
- An adjustable, detachable hood, offering customizable shelter from the elements.
- A durable main zipper, equipped with a two-way slider for ease and flexibility.
- 750-loft white goose down, ethically and responsibly sourced, ensuring exceptional warmth without compromise.
- DWR-treated down, ensuring that even in the rain, the down resists water, prevents clumping, and continues to insulate.
- A robust Premium C-Canvas outer shell, paired with a soft nylon taffeta lining, and reinforced at critical wear points for unmatched durability.
- Ample storage with two internal chest pockets, an external chest pocket, and two fleece-lined hand pockets for warmth and convenience.

YKK zip and of course they come with our lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship.
Available in black only.
Made right here in NZ.

- Comfort-enhancing fleece-lined cuffs, a testament to our attention to every detail.
Proudly made in New Zealand, the Cactus Canvas Down Jacket is more than just a piece of clothing; it's a commitment to quality, durability, and the outdoor lifestyle that defines us.

Down vests or puffer vests are a 'must have' for New Zealand winters and without the arms, they're great for autumn and spring too. Good down vests are never cheap so when you buy one you want it to last. This is why we thought that we should take on the challenge to make a tougher down vest for those working and playing hard in the outdoors. And we did - super tough vests that stand up to gorse, firewood stacking, brushing past old farm gear and the likes.
Taking on broad feedback that we've had over the years, from both our customers and our repairs team, we've strengthened them in all the places that down vests are known to fail.
The latest evolution of our women's Cactus Down Vest features a grunty two way zipper, extra strengthening around the pockets, a removable hood, a few more 'Michelin man' rolls, improved water repelling super powers and so much more.
