The Cactus Washable Face Mask
We are constantly iterating on our products at Cactus. Following customer feedback, we have designed a new Cactus Face Mask that's washable, with replaceable filters (while doing our best to keep all of the goodness from our previous mask).
This Face Mask in a nutshell:
- The woven wool-filter is designed to be more than twice as easy to breathe through than standard masks.
- The filter media used in the mask filters 99% of particles down to 0.3 microns in size - for reference, to meet N95 standard, a filter must block 95% of these particles.
- We've designed it to seal snugly around the face for superior protection with an adjustable nose-wire to form a protective seal.
- Made in NZ - 100% cotton outer and a NZ wool-filter.
IMPORTANT:
- As mentioned above, the filter is tested in-house to P2/N95 levels.
- This face mask is washable but the filter must be removed (check care tab for further information).
- This face mask comes with one filter inside it, and replaceable filter packs are available for purchase.
- Check the care tab above for when to replace your filter.
- Wearing the mask cannot fully remove the risk of infection or contracting a disease.
- Due to face masks being a sanitary product, we cannot accept them for return, refund or exchange for any reason. We recognise this is quite different from the regular Cactus stance on returns/refunds/exchanges but unfortunately the nature of this product gives us no other option.
- Stop using the mask immediately if breathing becomes difficult.
- This Face Mask is a consumer product. It is not a respirator. It is not a medical device. It is not PPE.
Background:
Cactus have teamed up with Lanaco to create a highly efficient, portable Face Mask. We’ve placed Lanaco’s HELIX® woven Filter Media - an innovative natural wool filter - into a soft cotton outer. And voila, filtration that blocks harmful particles, pollution, bacteria and virus. The HELIX®Filter Media, scientifically tested within an inch of its life, proves kiwi sheep have got the goods to protect their two legged friends. In fact it’s so good, NASA are currently testing it to protect their space team.
Care Removing the Mask:
As with any mask used to filter out germs and viruses, care needs to be taken when removing the mask. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after touching the mask.
Taking Care of your Mask:
- Store below 30 degrees in a dry place. Keep separately in a sealed bag.
Washing your Mask:
- Remove and dispose of your filter before washing mask. (Washing the filter makes it less effective.)
- Warm gentle machine wash, not above 30 degrees celcius.
- Do not tumble dry. Do not iron. Do not bleach.
Lifetime of your Filter:
This filter works by trapping particles and micro-organisms in the fine filter threads. As such, over time it will need replacing. We would recommend filters being replaced (and the mask itself being washed) every month for normal use and more regularly for heavy use)
Replacing your Filter
If you are removing the filter from your mask, we recommend disposing of it and replacing it.
The mask comes with one filter, and we have filter packs of 5 available to purchase.
The wool, fluffy side of the filter is to face away from you (face down when you insert it into the mask.
This video shows you how to replace the Filter:
Packaging:
For hygiene purposes, we’ve had to package these Face Masks in a plastic bag. We’re not fond of this solution and will be looking for other methods, but in the meantime, let’s find as many ways as we can to ensure this bag is not single use.
NOTE: Our masks are a standard one-size-fits-most. However, due to everybody's face shape being different, we cannot assume it will fit absolutely everyone. Feedback suggests our masks don't work as well on people with beards or large chins.
- Insert the filter
- Place the face mask to your face
- Pull the elastic to a point that it is comfortable but snug (the better the seal on your face, the more effective the mask is)
- Tie a knot in the elastic

Due to popular demand we bring you Slim Fit Supertrousers. These will tuck into your gumboots easier, hook up less and are just as hardcore as your standard Supertrousers. Apart from the slimmer fit the only other difference to standard Supertrousers is a new waist band for added comfort. They also look really stylish around town ... and we're okay with that.
Note that the colour will lighten with use and washing as the natural cotton content of the fabric won't take a dye fixative in the same way as a 100% synthetic fabric.
Our Premium C-Canvas is just as hard wearing as the classic Cactus Ultra C-Canvas, but has a more comfortable finishing weave, so requires less breaking in time.
- Exclusive Premium C-Canvas. Durable and great to wear
- Made by happy people who’ll be even happier if you buy some
- Handle tricky manoeuvres with the articulated knee design
- Casual styling which can handle almost any social situation
- Clothing related embarrassing situations are minimised by YKK zips (because they’re the best) and bar-tacks at all stress points
- Cactus-Tough Lifetime Warranty
- Made in New Zealand
Fabric: Premium C-Canvas
Weight: 780 grams (Medium)
- Essentially, Canvas Supertrousers and Supershorts require a bit of a wear-in period to soften the fabric.
- The first three or so washes should be done by hand, then you should be right to machine wash.
- Use cold water with a mild powder detergent, rinse thoroughly, very gentle or no spin and line-dry.
-
Do not iron, dry clean, spin-dry or use bleach.
- When new, the stiffness of the fabric means it creases in points rather than soft folds - washing them in an aggressive or hot machine can cause damage on the crease points.
-
Our canvas also has a waterproofing agent which, if washed in an aggressive or hot machine, can shift and discolour. This will appear as white lines which cannot be removed.
-
Washing inside out will minimise lighter coloured creases on the outside of the fabric, but won’t remove stains quite as well.
- Drip dry without creases (it won't take long as the polyester in the fabric doesn't hold much water)
- Close zips while washing (they'll last longer)
- Note that all the colours will lighten with use and washing as the natural cotton content of the fabric won't take a dye fixative in the same way as a 100% synthetic fabric.
- If you get attacked by a pig and the fabric gets holed while saving your reproductive potential send them back and we'll patch ‘em for a small fee
- If you are still not sure, give us a call or flick us an email

Cactus Supertrousers might just be the world’s best general purpose trousers and they’re made right here in NZ. These trousers can handle a shortcut through the gorse, nailing up some framing, or fitting the chains on the access road. On the flip side they are just as sweet for waiting for your fix at the local coffee cart, stylin’ at a BBQ, or sitting in the office dreaming of better things. There are two types of people out there, those who love their Supertrousers, and those who haven’t bought any yet!
If these are a bit baggy for your liking, check out our slim-fit version – they're not your super skinny hipster jean; you can still build a house in them. If you're after some full-featured, work-specific trousers, Trade Supertrousers might be for you. If your legs run hot, check out our Supershorts.
For shorter inseams, add 'Hem Shorter' to your cart and specify a length in centimetres.

Supershorts - our original “free standing” shorts. Supershorts are constructed with our tough, comfortable C-Canvas. Not the cheapest material in the world but we’re yet to find a better material – its combination of durability and breathable comfort is what makes these shorts possible.
Antelope, Black and Olive are all made from our new Premium C-Canvas, a durabe 12oz canvas with a softer finish.
These will end up being possibly the most comfortable shorts you own - and they’ll stay that way for a long, long time; truly shorts that wear in, not out. If you need proof of the comfort and durability, James chose them for a 18,000km bicycle ride around the globe. We’ve got them framed up on the wall of fame here at Cactus HQ. Think a lighter weight pair might suit you better? Go and visit our SOS Supershorts. Don’t want to inflict your lower legs on innocent bystanders? Try our Supertrousers. Proudly made in NZ.

In keeping with the theme of ‘staple’ gear for Kiwis, we bring you the Cactus Checked Flannel Shirt. Now complete and glowing with awesomeness we’re all wondering why we took so long to make these.
From the tradie go-to work top, to the urbanite’s default classic and the weekend warrior’s dash-and-grab favourite, the flannel shirt has to be one of the most versatile items of clothing.
Now you can probably pick up a flannel shirt from your local red shed for the price of half a dozen (non-craft) beers but it will never outlive, look as good, or feel as amazing as the Cactus version. So what makes the Cactus Checked Flannel Shirt stand out from the rest?
- It’s made from quality, 100% Cotton, 233gsm soft and warm brushed flannel
- NASA grade thread (that's strong!) and military grade buttons
- Voluminous, generous length chest pockets - they fit notebooks & phones
- Felled side seams for strength
- Long back to save you from the infamous butt crack issue
- Roomy enough to nicely fit a Cactus merino underneath for extra warmth on those cold days
- Reasonably high collar - high enough to keep the sun off but not so high as to look like a dork
- Double layered shoulders for extra strength and durability
- NZ made - right here in Christchurch
Please note: shrinkage may occur in first wash.

The Trade Supershorts are a true, fully featured work short for those who's work demands it. We've taken the Trade Supertrousers kept all the best bits and removed everything below the knee. Your essentials are all close at hand with dedicated pockets for a cellphone, ruler, and punches or measuring tape and a reinforced hammer loop that stands out for easy use. The large main pockets at the waist are external so the contents don’t get in the way so much when you crouch down. Those pockets are tough enough for a handful of nails or screws occasionally, but we’ve tried crouching down with screws in our pockets and it isn’t that pleasant. Two full size pockets at the back give you a place for the “can you just pick some stuff up from the supermarket on your way home” shopping list. The belt loops are wide enough to take a full width equipment belt.
Antelope, Black and Olive are all made from our Ultra C-Canvas.
Need tool carrying capacity but don’t think people want to see your legs? Our Trade Supertrousers and Trade Plus Supertrousers are for you. Don’t get to use a hammer much at work but love our shorts? Have a look at our Supershorts.
- Super durable and highly wearable Ultra C-Canvas
- Cellphone pocket

- Ruler and measure pockets help you only cut once

For all you old school people out there who think they'll be too warm for summer, merino is not only super warm in the winter, it's also super breathable in the summer.
The Cactus socks come in black and in three sizes. Made in New Zealand.
*depending on personal hygiene, they will stink after several days of wear without washing.

Love Cactus Slim Supertrousers, but wish they came in a lighter, softer fabric? The Cactus CNC Fabric is for you. These are a similar cut to C-Canvas Slim Supertrousers, so they'll tuck into your gumboots easier, hook up less, and as a bonus, they look really stylish around town. The difference is they're made from our CNC Fabric, which is less stiff and lighter.
Note: The Armadillo colour fabric is designed to fade to a washed denim-look. With just a little bit of wear, your Supertrousers will fade to a highly-fashionable worn-in look, so you don't have to look like the shiny-pants new fella round town.
- CNC fabric is durable and great to wear
- Made by happy people who’ll be even happier if you buy some
- Handle tricky manoeuvres with the articulated knee design

Inseam
Measure pants that fit you well. Lay them flat and measure from the crotch to the bottom of the leg hem. If you don't have suitable pants, measure from your crotch to your desired pant leg length.
- The leg lengths of the standard CNC Slim Supertrousers fit 95% of people just fine, but for those of you who need them shorter we can customise.
- If you would like your CNC Slim Supertrousers hemmed to be shorter then you need to add Hem Shorter to this order where you can specify the length.
-
Please note that custom length shorts and trousers cannot be returned so please choose and measure carefully - call or email us if you are not sure.

Hangdog Shorts are a reinvention of our classic Hangdog climbing shorts from the 90s. Only nowadays they've been revamped to suit to a more holistic, lifestyle-based approach to recreating outdoors.
Hangdog Shorts are made from a soft but durable polycotton drill fabric that also has a wee bit of mechanical stretch. We've rigorously wear-tested these by spending heaps of time out biking and climbing in the Port Hills. Product development can be a hard job eh, but someone's gotta do it! We've come to the firm conclusion that Hangdogs are the ultimate go-to shorts for doing good, active stuff outdoors, and they don't leave you feeling like a dork at the cafe or bbq afterwards.
Available in any colour, as long as it's slimming black.

Tired of waterproof breathable jackets that wear out? The Cactus Mountain Jacket is for you. Built in ultra tough 3 layer WTF-3 fabric, with real exterior pockets and no bogus lighter-weight pocket linings that leak, this heavy duty jacket will protect you from the elements with way more durability than your average cut-price waterproof/breathable garment.
Here's what our testers thought of it:
"I thought the fit of the jacket was spot on. The storm flap definitely did the job of keeping snow out of the pocket - even when I forgot to zip it up I didn't loose any goodies from the pocket. I really like having no hip pockets, as there is nothing to hinder and bunch up when bending at the hip. The pockets were sufficient for carrying all the stuff I needed for ski patrolling. Another feature I thought was pretty tiptop is the foldaway collar, it works nicely when snow is blowing everywhere."
"I was surprised at how well this thing breathes given how burly the fabric is. I never got hot skiing in it, and it’s obviously gonna last forever. Had a couple of stormy days in it on the mountain, it was totally wind and snow proof and the fabric didn’t soak, so it stayed supple yet bombproof in nasty weather."
- Do not dry clean
- Non-chlorine bleach only when needed
- Tumble dry on a medium heat to rejuvenate DWR coating
- Don't have a dryer? Just drip dry then iron on low heat, no steam to rejuvenate DWR Coating
- Close zips while washing (they'll last longer)
- Over time you may need to restore the DWR coating. We recommend using ReviveX Durable Water Repellent Spray
- Don't use permanent-marker, or any other solvent, on the lining of your garment
- If you get attacked by the abominable snowman and the fabric gets holed while saving your arm, send it back and we'll patch it
